Marsha Hintch is a retail merchandiser, and helps with the front counter + sales in Webster City, Iowa.
- Years Employed at Gilcrest/Jewett: 2 Months
- What is one of the favorite parts of your job:
I really like the retail space. I am very impressed with the variety of items we sell and the ability to add and try new ones.
- What are some of your favorite products to sell and why?
My favorite would probably be roofing because it is easy to sell the whole project. The customer needs to have all of it, you can’t cut corners.
Working in the construction industry
- How long have you been working in the building industry? 10 years
- What initially drew you to a career in the construction industry?
I was a big DIYer, if I didn’t know how to do it, I used resources to figure it out.
- Did you have any female role models in the construction/building industry?
When I started in a big box store, there was a gal there that did all the estimates, she was very good at her job and all the contractors wanted to work with her specifically. Really made me want to do as well as she did and I did achieve that status during my time there.
- What advice would you give to other women considering a career in this industry?
It’s not really all that hard. Don’t be overwhelmed by the idea of building. You can learn it just like you would any other job and what you learn is very useful. You will find yourself applying it to your daily lives.
- What skills or attributes do you believe are essential for women to succeed in the construction/building industry?
A decent understanding of math helps.
