Deborah Foster is a Drafter/Designer for Plum Design in Waukee Iowa.
- Years Employed at Gilcrest/Jewett: 8-10 years
- What is one of the favorite parts of your job:
One of my favorite things about my job is when I get to create 3D visual renderings for clients.
- What is one design trend you like right now?
I like that Craftsman elevations are making a comeback! The only thing that would make me happier is if Victorian style homes could make a comeback too…
- What is a product you think customers should know more about?
I wish people knew more about the 3D visuals that we can create with our plan design.
- Describe some skills your job needs:
You need to be able to visualize spaces in your mind, design outside of the box to give clients unique features in their homes, and consider how everything will go together structurally.
- What is your proudest accomplishment in your career at Gilcrest/Jewett?
I’ve had the chance to design several Homeshow homes and create awesome promo material, but one thing that I look forward to every year and will always view as an accomplishment is going to the Build My Future Event to talk to teenagers about a future career in the Building Industry.
Working in the construction industry
- How long have you been working in the building industry? Since 2008
- What initially drew you to a career in the construction industry?
I don’t remember exactly when my love for residential design began, it might have been when my best friend and I designed our own horse ranch as a kid. Then in High School, I took a CAD class and knew designing houses was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. My CAD teacher, Mr. Riley, encouraged me to take every construction/drafting class our school had to offer, and I will forever be grateful that he supported and encouraged me to follow this career path.
- What advice would you give to other women considering a career in this industry?
We need more women in this industry – don’t let the fact that it is a mostly male dominated industry keep you from doing what you love to do. The right company will see your value – not your gender.
- What skills or attributes do you believe are essential for women to succeed in the construction/building industry?
The ability to confidently take ownership of your contributions, even in environments where your work may be more likely to be attributed to male colleagues.
